Lately I have been overwhelmed with patients and friends asking for advise on how to help with different symptoms at home using natural remedies. So, I’ve decided to put together a list of recommendations, on herbs that are great to have in our natural “medicine” cabinet. Some of them – also great to grow ourselves 🙂

so without further ado, please welcome my star medicinal herbs, some of them are always in my travel bag as well!

Mullein

I first learned about this medicinal herb when I was trying to find something my prenatal patients could take for their cough. So many formulas seems to contain at least one herb that has no evidence of being safe during pregnancy so we had to skip that remedy. Once I learned about Mullein, I discovered it was a “must have” as it it beneficial for cough as well as for asthma, and other respiratory issues. I’ve also seen great result when using it for sinus infections. When taking Mullein drops, make sure to give kids the alcohol free version.

Usnea

Oil of Oregano used to be my first choice for strep throat, until I learned about Usnea!. While oil of Oregano is an amazing “natural antibiotic”, Usnea is also an antimicrobial that is more specific to throat inflammations. I tend to alternate between them when there are such cases,  but if I had to choose just one – Usnea would be my first choice.

Echinacea

This is a wonderful herb that is considered to be a natural antibiotic and I find it especially beneficial when feeling like you are coming up with something. I also saw good results when using it for a week or 2 as part of a natural treatment for enlarged adenoids.

Moringa

Moringa is considered a super food! It is rich in nutrients, antioxidants and more. This herb is beneficial for the immune system as well as to reduce stress in our system. It is also great picky eaters that do not get enough nutrients and is often successful in increasing milk production in nursing moms.

Frankincense

Over the years I have found that oil of oregano has been more helpful when the body was fighting off bacteria, while Frankincense seemed to be more beneficial when the body was fighting off a virus. This medicinal seems to also help the body detox from chemicals (meds, vaccines, etc…).  I once gave my nephew a Frankincense roll on although it said it’s for arthritis, I got it since it’s easy to use. When my nephew had a viral infection, he said it worked like a charm!

Oil of Oregano

I think by now you know that I love using this medicinal, but I need to  mention that this one is the most difficult to take – it has such a strong flavor. I recommend diluting in carrier oil and then consuming a few drops on a cracker, but if you can tolerate the taste – it’s ok to take in some water. for kids (over 3 as it is not recommended for younger kids) – I dilute in a carrier oil and rub on the arch of the sole of their feet and then cover with a sock.
